Photo Contest Winners

Fall 2024

Kimya Jalinous – Cultural Engagement

Cape Town, South Africa

The South Africa vs. South Sudan Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying soccer game. In Cape Town, the Bafana Bafana engaged with the vibrant home crowd to win 3-0.

Tracy Che – Nature and Cityscape

Lake Pukaki, New Zealand

This photo was taken besides Lake Pukaki when we finished hiking to the glaciers and were driving back. The road is long, narrow, and curved, but the snow mountains were always huge, steady, and always sitting behind me. Snow Mountain to me is a substance that I would never be at the same height with. They are so pure and so powerful, and I would always love them and stare at them holding my breath. The sunshine changed a lot during sunset time when I took the picture, and the mountain shifted from white to orange to pink, beautiful and stunning in different ways.

Gia Poznanski – Art of the Selfie

Menorca, Spain

This is me taking a Spanish snack break after swimming in the Cala en Brut in Menorca. I had just jumped off the cliffs like the rest of the locals, and it was one of the most incredible experiences ever. Despite the water being crystal clear, I still got stung by a jellyfish, but apparently, it is a right of passage for the islanders here to be stung at least once a week. I guess it is their version of a Mediterranean love tap.

Kimya Jalinous – The World is Your Classroom

Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

Rather than at a traditional safari, this picture was taken at Knysna Elephant Park on South Africa’s coastal Garden Route. Being the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants, we learned about conservation efforts from its founding in 1994.

Spring 2024

Mitchell Carter- Cultural Engagement

Holly Hodges- Nature and Cityscape

Mt. Cook, New Zealand

This photo was taken at Mt. Cook in the south island of New Zealand. What an unforgettable sight… and maybe one of my favorite places in the world. In front of Mt. Cook, sits a glacier and a body of water from the melted portions of it. Stunning.

Jaylah Wilson- Art of the Selfie

Paros, Greece

This photo was taken in front of a small Greek Orthodox Church on the cycladic island of Paros, Greece. The whitewashed walls and blue details are what Greece is famous for, and it was such a magical moment to experience that for the first time.

Julia Molinaro- The World is Your Classroom

Delphi, Greece

Delphi is a beautifully preserved archaeological site in the Greek mountains. It was the religious centre and symbol of unity of the ancient Greek world, and we had the pleasure of visiting during our first school trip. Our professors walked us through the near-empty site teaching about the temple of Apollo and his oracles and it was one of the most engaging classes I have ever attended.

Fall 2023

Marita Alnimiri- Cultural Engagement

Madrid, Spain

Immersed in the vibrant energy of fútbol, witnessing the epic clash of football titans at El Clásico between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Surrounded by passionate fans, the stadium echoed with cheers, showcasing the heart and soul of Spanish football culture. A moment etched in time, celebrating the beautiful game in the heart of a historic stadium. (shot on a digital camera from the 80s)

Piya Garg- Nature and Cityscape

Altyn Emel National Park, Kazakhstan

On the top of the famous ‘singing sand dunes’ in Altyn Emel National Park .

Katrina Dang- Nature and Cityscape

Chobe National Park, Botswana

Exploring the beautiful wildlife within an arm’s reach in Botswana was an unforgettable experience. This photo was taken at the Chobe River in northern Botswana, home to an endless number of animals. Our safari boat had stopped to admire the herds of elephants passing through so calmly, and the only sound you could hear was the gentle flow of the river all around us.

Araceli Guzman Mercier- Art of the Selfie

Meet Charlie! Unlike the Looney Tunes character Taz depicts, Tasmanian Devils can actually be quite cute and cuddly as you can see from this picture of Charlie, an 11-month-old joey. I had the opportunity to meet her up close at the Australian Reptile Park near Sydney and find out the red ears are quite adorable in person.

Tal Slon- The World Is Your Classroom

Fez, Morocco

After asking a tea seller what herbs were in his brew, we needed someone to help translate Arabic Darija to English. We wandered into an apothecary in the old city of Fez and investigated the herbs and languages on offer, writing down everything along the way.

Jillian Gorman- The World Is Your Classroom

Tasmania, Australia

The first photo is of my friend Venla under the night sky at Binalong Bay (Tasmania, AUS). We had decided to set up camp here for the night. After building a fire at the campsite and cooking our dinner, we took out headlamps to explore the quiet beach at night. We were quick to put out our lights when we noticed the mesmerizing night sky. The photo was a somewhat vain attempt to capture a memory that will forever remain on that beach.

Spring 2023

Lavender Billingsley- Cultural Engagement

Domme, France

Getting a handmade ice-cream shop owned by two friendly brothers in a town called Domme. My mom was a solely French local who has lived in Domme his whole life. He showed us all around the little town and told stories of his childhood as we ate our ice cream and took in the beautiful architecture and cascading view of the Dordogne region.

Jamie Gallo- Nature and Cityscape

Padrón, Spain

“At the end of my study abroad I hiked the Camino de Santiago with two of my closest friends. On the penultimate day of the pilgrimage, as we backpacked into the town of Padrón, we spotted a donkey in a field below our path. After walking for ten miles, all of us desperate for food and a nap, my friend Cameron calmly crossed through the high grass to pet this donkey. This memory was a beautiful lesson in cherishing every moment of our journey and keeping yourself open to new experiences each step of the way.”

Nathan Kim- The Art of the Selfie

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Posing in Front of the Serene Gyeongbokgung Palace Lake While Wearing a Hanbok.

Odalyz Morfin- The World Is Your Classroom

Mt. Fuji, Japan

Exploring the cultural significance of Mt. Fuji.
